The view of the eclipse and sunrise from Sabren's Grove this historic solstice morn was nil. Above snow laden clouds all was removed from sight.
As the sun rose in the deep south east beyond the Severn horseshoe bend, Sabren's filling silver torc, the western horizon was dominated by the full moon, totally eclipsed by the earth. The first time this event has happened on winter solstice since 1638. Sadly it was not to be witnessed from Sabren's Grove, where the remnants of Roman foundations mark the site of the cult shrine of the goddess Sabrina, at the eastern edge of the Forest of Dean, overlooking the magnificent horseshoe bend of the river Severn.
None of the Celtic mythos could therefore be experienced on this winter day, which under the grey blanket, seemed like any other. I don't think I shall be around to stand and stare in 2094 when the winter solstice lunar eclipse next occurs. Ah well maybe my son Ocean will be.

The bore was pretty mellow today through Newnham and up past the Cliffs. A lot of surfers out at Boats and half a dozen or so making the connection through to Newnham straight. Stand up paddle boarders, SUPs, now appearing in serious numbers.
Television film crews from Country File likely to be out on the water tomorrow filming with Steve King from the Boat.
With loads of hype for Tuesday's bore its going to be crowded. There is too much water Gloucester end and Minsterworth is sketchy. Nonetheless some of the biggest bores have been recorded on film in past years, upriver of Longney, with more freshwater than today so there is always the chance of a memorable wave at Secrets (no longer secret) for those seeking to get away from the herd.Stay stoked, stay safe.

The best since last February in fact.Steve King had some good long rides, with Boats to Epney giving four miles plus.
The bores forecast for early next week, at the beginning of March, look like being particularly powerful with potential for head high waves in many sections of the river.

Severn Barrage history is once more being repeated. Time and again for more than half a century would be dammers have sought to produce short term gain by violating the greatest river in the British Isles. Let's hope this latest News is for real and the wonderful Severn estuary and Severn Bore of the lower river will be finally preserved for our posterity. Bore riders will hopefully celebrate in the New Year when it is due to become official that the plans for a Severn barrage are dead and buried
"Government set to shelve £23bn Severn Barrage tidal project" 30th October 2009
The Times newspaper reports that the ten-mile tidal barrage across the River Severn to generate an estimated 5 per cent of Britain's electricity are likely to be shelved due to government's drive to cut costs. The Sustainable Development Commission et al argue the barrage would help Britain meet its EU targets of generating 30 per cent of UK electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
Government figures show the costs of generating electricity from a barrage across the Severn could be as high as £317 per megawatt hour, compared with £38 for nuclear power and no more than £85 for offshore wind.

He and Marcos rode the Dragon in an event arranged by the Chinese Government, comprising two Brazilian and two American surfers. It sounds as if the Brazilians, with their superior experience of tidal bores, stole the show.
Sergio had an interview with the biggest Chinese sporting magazine.
