The storm surge was approximately 0.5 of a metre at Avonmouth at high tide this morning. The big bore just did'nt happen and the winds in the river pretty much wrecked it, but hey that's the unpredictability of it all really. Tonight's bore does'nt look like being much bigger either with the flowing tide at Avonmouth tracking the prediction and the winds dying back.

A major westerly gale forecast for Sunday night and Monday morning in the Bristol Channel will push an increased tidal surge into the mouth of the river Severn, to impact on the peak March spring tide. There is a probability for some spectacular bore waves which in some notorious areas could be dangerous especially with the low freshwater river levels. However with a predicted tide of 9.4 metres and low river levels the bore on Monday is not likely to be all time. Good advice to increasing numbers of surfers visiting the river right now would be:-
If you have'nt done it before or if you are an inexperienced surfer or swimmer watch it first at Newnham and try for it upriver.
Look out for your mates.
Keep away from the bank edge waves which can be lethal.
Stay Stoked, Donny Wright

Well its official and was in the Chinese Press. 17.1 Kilometres or just under 11 miles is an immense ride for the longest continuously ridden wave in the world. The fact that it was a surfing result carried out illegally puts a lot of gloss on this one and rather takes us back to the old days of surf pioneering.
Without information as to whether the Guinness adjudicators were present or whether or not it was a continuous stand up ride under British rules, it is too early to say how this compares with the previous records of Dave Lawson and Steve King on the Severn, and Serghino Laus on the Araguari.
On behalf of all the Bore Riders Club we congratulate Eduardo Bagé and Patrick Audoy on this great achievment.
Last year there was quite a bit of confusion around Severnside when Duncan Scott had an awesome ride which far exceeded the stand up record. This led to comments by the BSA that different categories for long distance records may be appropriate. In Longwave the Extra segment The Making of Longwave, I talked about the potential for an all time day on the Severn Bore. In the right conditions, on the back of a huge low and the 100 mph winds that can blow up the Bristol Channel, I believe history can show us that the bore could be ridden from possibly below Sharpness all the way to Gloucester, well in excess of 20 miles. There is no way that would be possible as a continuous stand up ride. However it does make the point that the river Severn does and will always compare with the greatest tidal bores in the world. Recently Steve King has been riding the bore in the Frampton channel and I believe he still remains the person most likely to produce the longest stand up rides.

Since that Longwave newsdesk 8 days ago there has been a tiny addition of 36 names or 5 a day.
The Bore Riding Journey continues.

Every year the Bore Riders Club has held a Christmas Party. It's always been a small affair because the local scene has been small if not necessarily local, with bore riders such as Irene coming from London area and Toots from Swansea. When we started out 10 years ago it was different to today, but then with the boreriders.com and the release of longwave, we inevitably have become overtaken by our own success at sharing a unique lifestyle and bringing it to the world through the tools of today.
The worldwide interest in bore riding has risen to a completely new level as the boundaries have been pushed out. I've just heard from Tom that the French will be taking on the China bore this month and Wingnut currently in Indo is showing interest in joining their team. Bore surfing has always attracted competition because the thrill of a super long ride can also bring the kudos of an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. Equally getting to a new tidal bore first can raise the temperature in the international scene.
From those crazy early days of the 1990s a new time dawns. The current mood on the Severn hints at fragmentation, always a logical end point in any sub culture as numbers increase, ideas evolve and the wheel starts turning again. The Bore Riders Club is evolving as a lot more surfers appear on the scene. It is there for everyone because it was and is a concept of fellowship. Yet within that fellowship there will be independent families. It's impossible to engage large numbers of surfers all in the same place. As surfers we are all pretty independent types.
My hope is that the Bore Riders of the Severn unite in one vision. That is to protect this natural wonder of Britain for our children's children. The Severn bore is of great cultural and natural importance. It is not significant to the natural world of the Severn estuary and its plain, it is fundamentally important to it. For example any pseudo scientific jargon which talks of relocating the Habitat in order to justify the Severn Barrage is a lie. For thousands of years the habitat has been driven by the diurnal tide. Destroy the tide and we destroy it all
Any gathering of bore riders this month in celebration of 10 years of the Bore Riders Club, whether a single gathering or a splintered one, whether on the west bank or the east, will I hope unite to protect and preserve Sabrina's Legacy.
We have been given the opportunity at the Prime Ministers Petition stop the barrage
